I'm a day late, but I thought I would join in with a blog meme call Holdgepodge Wednesday. I enjoy reading other bloggers' posts on this, which is sponsored by a lovely blog called From This Side of the Pond.
1. This week's Hodgepodge lands on Ash Wednesday which signals the beginning of Lent. Do you mark this season in some way? If so tell us more. Did you grow up 'celebrating' Lent? Is attending church part of your weekly routine? Are churches open for in-person worship where you live?
I did grow up celebrating Lent, although our family weren't super strict Catholics and I always appreciated that our Lenten observance was kept quiet. We each decided what we would give up, and then it was up to us to do our best. My children all went to Catholic school, and we observed the Church calendar. The past few years, I've chosen a book to study, and this year a couple of friends and I are reading one together - The Last Week by John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg. Church is no longer part of my weekly Sunday routine, but I do drop in at morning mass during the week.
2. When is the last time you sat beside a 'real' fire? Do you have a fireplace in your home? Wood or gas logs? Favorite thing cooked over a fire?
We have a fire pit in our back yard. The last time we had a fire was in the fall. The grandkids came over and we roasted marshmallows and made smores. I love being around a fire with friends and family. It reminds me of our camping days when the kids were younger. We do not have a fireplace in this home and I sure miss it. I love hotdogs cooked over a fire.
3. Something that's currently got you fired up?
I've been making a conscious effort NOT to be fired up about things these days. Last fall and the election had me in a state of 'fired up,' so I'm really trying to let things unfold as they will and not add fuel to the fire.
4. February also happens to be National Cabbage Day. Who knew? Do you like cabbage? Is cabbage on your menu Wednesday? Of the following cabbage dishes which is your favorite-coleslaw (mayo or vinegar?), sauerkraut, cabbage rolls, cabbage soup, kielbasa and cabbage, grilled cabbage, bubble and squeak, kimchi, or haluski?
Cabbage will be on the menu for St. Patrick's Day. I like cabbage -- cabbage rolls, coleslaw with mayo, sauerkraut on hot dogs, kielbasa and cabbage -- I like it all!
5. Do you hang on to pennies? What do you do with them? Last thing you purchased for $1.00? Last thing you purchased for $5.00?
I don't save pennies, but I tend to save buffalo nickels and the state quarters that feature buffalos. I like buffalos:) The last thing I purchased for a dollar was a coloring book at the dollar store for my grandson. My last five dollar purchase was a mocha latte, an indulgence for me.

We woke up to a fresh blanket of snow this morning. Just enough to have to shovel, but not a big nuisance. We need the moisture and it has warmed up a bit to the 20s, so it feels rather festive.

ReplyDeleteThanks for joining in this week. I forgot to include corned beef and cabbage in my answers, but its definitely a favorite here too. Maybe because I make it just once a year. I am enjoying my days more outside the hot zone : )
