On Mother's Day

This photo of my mother was taken about the time that she was raising a houseful of teenagers, which is about where I am right now in my life. (One is not exactly a teenager, but I can't say that he's a full-fledged adult, since he's still on our medical plan.)

A week ago today, was the 10th anniversary of my mother's passing. I can't believe that my life has been without her for so many years. My children were 3, 7 and 10 when she passed away. I think of all the things I missed sharing with her. People try to console me by saying, "She's with you, she's seeing it all." I know that to be true. I feel her presence every day and I know that she is with me. However, selfishly, my sadness is because I am not able to share moments with her and see her smile, hear her laugh, and listen to her wise counsel when I need it most. She had such a joy and appreciation of life, and sharing it with her, as her daughter, has been one of the greatest blessings of my life.

On Mother's Day, I think of her with love and cherished memories, and hope that I can be the kind of mother to my own children, that she was for me.

Wishing moms everywhere a Happy Mother's Day!

  2. What a sweet tribute to your Mom. Some feelings never fade, but just become a part of who we are, don't you think? Hope you had a wonderful day.

  4. Mother's Day is so bittersweet for those who have lost their moms. I can't even imagine. Especially with her passing so near to that special day every year.

I know she would be proud of the mom that you are. Putting your family first, making sacrifices, loving unconditionally. You learned from the best!!

  8. Karen, that was such a sweet post. I never quite know what to say to those who've lost their mom, as I truly don't know how it feels. Your mom, a beautiful woman, by the way, seems to have instilled that same joy and appreciation of life into you. It rings through loud and clear in your writings.
